Here at Churchill Square, we are proud to support a wide range of environmental, social and corporate governance campaigns. Over the years we have won three Green Apple Awards – these awards recognise the best environmental campaigns from around the world. Sustainable campaigns we have run include Break the Bag Habit and our Beach Cleans.
To tie in with World Environment Day 2019, we wanted to make a difference in Brighton. To do this, we implemented three different initiatives that all tied in together as the one overall campaign. They included the community aspect, raising awareness of the impact plastic has on our environment and make an impact with reducing plastic waste.
Working in partnership with SeaLife Brighton, we ran four beach cleans over the May bank holiday. All of the rubbish that was collected was used to build a sculpture that was then put on display in the shopping centre so that our customers could see the amount of rubbish that is being left behind on our beautiful beaches.
We also became the first UK shopping centre to remove plastic bags from our stores for the day. We replaced store bags with sustainably produced bags for life. Following this, one of our jewellery stores has continued to not use the plastic bags that they used to return repaired items to customers in, and now only use reusable material pouches.
During the weeklong campaign, we also only promoted sustainable products available in our stores on social media.
Break the Bag Habit returned in 2020 for plastic recycle week and has now became a staple campaign in our marketing strategy. Following the success of the beach cleans, we have also continued to run these on a regular basis.
Since the introduction of our cleans, we have collected a total of 159 kgs of rubbish which has all been recycled responsibly. For further information on future beach cleans and how to get involved, please visit https://www.churchillsquare.com/whats_on/brighton-beach-clean-2/
In addition to this, we work with local stakeholders and charity partners to support city-wide initiatives, including Brighton Pride and Brighton Festival.
We work with local children’s charity Rockinghorse on our Giving Trees, where customers purchase a toy for children that will be in hospital during the Christmas holidays.
Over the last three Christmases, our customers have generously donated a total of 1,288 gifts which amounts to £12,660.
We are also proud to support Purple Tuesday; Purple Tuesday is about creating a step change improvement in the awareness of the value and needs of disabled customers – this takes place annually in November, however, it is important that these improvements are considered and reviewed all year round, so if you have any feedback please do not hesitate to contact us details can be found on our Guest Services page.
We are very grateful to our shoppers for their continued support, and thank you all for working with us to protect the environment.
