Books, music, movies and more!
With the nights drawing in and the temperatures easing us out of the long, warm summer days, it is time to turn our thoughts to making the most of all the entertainment on offer here at Churchill Square.
You'll find all the hottest new releases as well as classics and more esoteric and indie titles. And, of course, resident Brightonions' cultural contribution. Browse a while - we've got books, music, films and games coming out of our ears this Autumn!
Here are our favourite titles this month.
The Death of Bunny Monro.
He is a musician, an actor, a producer and the owner of remarkable facial hair; our some-time Brighton resident Nick Cave doesn't disappoint in his first literary contribution in the two decades since, "And the Ass Saw an Angel."
Hot off the presses for Autumn, the singer/songwriter's dark new novel is a story about a salesman searching for a soul in the wake of his pending demise. With so much of the action (if that is what the correct term to sum up the main protagonist's car-crash of a life) being set on and around the South Coast, Cave gives his lastest work a familiar ring. More than that, this stylish and funny tale is told with a considerable amount of both horror and humanity. Prepare for a downright compulsive read.
Cohen Bros Box Set. For a way to warm up the cooling autumn evenings, this foursome from the film-making duo, the Cohen brothers, is the perfect addition to your collection. Known for their dark iconic comedies, this box set features some of Joel and Ethan's best works including both their critically acclaimed feature debut Blood Simple and the quirky cult classic The Big Lebowski.
So pull up a chair, pour yourself a White Russian and take this motion picture excuse to spend some quality time with "the dude."
Coraline. If you need a break from reality, step inside one of parallel proportions. This animated adventure based on the award winning writer Neil Gaimans fantasy/horror novel Coraline is just as thought provoking as it is imaginative. A tale about relationships, complacency and imagination, this crowd pleaser will have your whole family not only entertained but appreciating each other all the more for it. Coraline is a must see, truly worthwhile fantastic adventure.
State of Play. This American screenplay based on the British miniseries packs both an action and star power punch.
With a compelling plot line, well crafted dialog and excellent performances from the likes of Helen Mirren and Russell Crowe, this pacy thought provoking film will take you on a wild ride. The twisted ending will put you in a state to play it again.
Daniel Merriweather "Love & War". Melbourne bred singer/songwriter Daniel Merriweather makes an impression on the R&B world with his debut album Love & War. This tender tenor's emotional lyrics colliding with funky brass infused pop styling, make it a first-rate solo offering. His top 10 singles "Red" and "Change" are just a few reasons why we dig this kid from down under.
Muse "Resistance". In their 5th album and long awaited follow up to their rousing success Black Holes and Revelations, the Muse comes through with yet another genre fusion fun-ride. Combining the melancholic undertones of waltzing pianos with their signature space rock verve, this album is filled with the catchy harmonic vocals and varied electronic beats we have come to expect from this stadium filler. An eclectic collection of tunes that will have you aching for more.
Assassin's Creed 2. Set in Renaissance Italy, the second version of this blockbuster game boasts a new location and a new hero. With additional weapons, monetary system and secondary missions to avoid what some felt was repetition in the first version, this highly anticipated sequel delivers an action packed. And with its improved open ended play format, you never know where the vengeance, conspiracy and intrigue may lead you.
Ashes Cricket 2009.
Named after the notorious Ashes tournament between England and Australia, Ashes 2009 reminds us why we love Cricket...and having a pop at our brothers from the former colonies. Codemasters multi-platform brings authentic athleticism and all the official players to insure an entertaining match.
Will you be able to recreate this summer's historic win of the most famous and tiniest trophy in world sport or will you retire in gracious defeat like a true English gentleman?
Don't Sleep, There are Snakes. Being honest is an important quality but finding the phrase "goodnight" useless and empty, before a bedtime the Pirahã Indians say: "Don't sleep. There are snakes." This true story of how Daniel Everett went to the Amazon as a missionary and came back an atheist is a undomesticated and heartfelt read. The first outsider to become fluent in their virtually indecipherable 8 consonant 3 vowel language, the modern world has retained most of what we know about this tribe from this memoir. Written in episodic style, this journey of life, language and faith in a culture that currently remains virtually untouched by external society, will change the way you look at the world.
The Time Travelers Wife. With its summertime release just behind us, the literary inspiration for the film The Time Travelers Wife is primed for a closer look. This clever and compelling tale of a man who cannot control his ability to time travel is a beautifully told love story about what it means to be alive.
Romantic and witty, its compelling characters and solid storytelling despite the obvious difficulties of illustrating backward and forward time travel, are a true testament to Audrey Niffeneggers imagination and skill for her craft.
